I… Lyndon Darkes

My early passion for art and design lead me to study Photography at Sandwell College, a centre of excellence in the newly emerging technology of Digital Photography. Although I adored traditional photography I was absolutely captivated by its digital form. I appreciated that I was incredibly lucky to be involved at the very infancy of digital photography at a college that was to become renowned for its innovation in the field.

The course opened my eyes to the immense possibilities of the emerging medium; I became aware of how it would impact not only photography but graphic design and the entire design world.

I spent my entire student grant on a refurbished computer and the software needed and set about not only learning what I could do with the machine, but also how it fundamentally worked. I was completely absorbed by the creative possibilities and what the future held.

I won Student Photographer of the year 1998 (sponsored by The Independent and Jessops) and went onto graduate with Distinction.

I moved to Plymouth College of Art and Design for an additional 1 year Photography Course, and this presented an opportunity to learn digital animation and web coding. I entered my academic career expecting to study art and traditional photography, but my interest in digital photography lead me down an unexpected path, and I completed my studies excelling in new digital media.

In 2000 I took a position as a designer at an exciting new web based media agency in Birmingham, joining a great team from varied creative and IT backgrounds. Affiliated with and approved by Business Link, our clients enjoyed partial funding by the government. As a team we went on to win numerous web awards for our work.

Early in 2002, still with the design agency I began lecturing part time on digital publishing and web design at Sandwell College.

A large majority of my web design classes were populated by business owners who feared not having a website, or by employees who had reluctantly found themselves being selected to head a new website project. I noticed that in most of these cases, the new world of online marketing seemed to be instilling fear in people rather than opening doors.

The web agency expanded and branched out into other commercial areas, and the design team became more concentrated on in-house projects. As a designer, this was a great opportunity; it allowed me to see from the inside the direct effect that your input has on a company and its growth. It made me realise that I needed to focus more on genuinely working side by side with clients rather than just selling them a design product.

We… Lyndon Darkes Design

In 2005 I set up as a freelance designer concentrating on web design and online marketing. I worked alongside a range of advertising agencies, allowing them to offer online services as part of their more traditional print-based output.

Lyndon Darkes Design quickly emerged as an independent company that could offer complete design services. I started to put the skills I had developed into practice, but drew heavily from my experiences and implemented my personal philosophies on client synergy and team work.

Based in Worcestershire (only a few miles outside Birmingham), I built up a varied clientele throughout the Midlands, Birmingham and Manchester.

In addition to working with large, well-established companies my broad skillset started attracting many new business start-ups embarking on their first steps into obtaining a web presence.

I quickly built up a reputation for honest, no nonsense advice, refusing to oversell; if a product would not help a company I would honestly advise them not to invest. I would explain my reasoning without jargon and help point them in a better direction. My attitude seemed refreshing to many companies, as in many cases they were being frightened into investing in fads and practices that would not benefit their industry or a company their size.

Over the years I have passionately kept up with emerging technologies and practices, and built up a team with complementary IT skills in order to allow me to concentrate on creative design elements where ever possible. Although I oversee and have input in all aspects of every project, the team efficiently handles the ever-growing technical aspects of the medium.
